Job Description

Disability Programs and Services (DPS) is currently seeking a BIO 120L laboratory assistant for a student with a visual impairment. Working under the direction of the student, the laboratory assistant performs procedures in campus labs that the enrolled student may not be able to perform. This role will involve assisting the enrolled student with the physical mechanics and/or dexterity requirements of the lab activities.

The enrolled student is responsible for directing the laboratory assistant’s activities and submission of all assignments. Laboratory assistants are not permitted to answer questions about the content of the lab assignment or exercise, and are not responsible for drawing conclusions from lab exercises or assignments. Laboratory Assistants are provided for academic curriculum support only and may not provide personal assistance.

DPS will clarify the requirements of the job and will train the Laboratory Assistant in the provision of the services.

Primary Responsibilities

Perform only specified tasks directed by the enrolled student.

Provide physical and/or manual assistance in the lab, but do not act as a tutor or a teacher.

Maintain a professional demeanor and attitude with the enrolled student

Do not prompt or guide the enrolled student in performing the lab task or interpreting lab assignments/questions.

Keep the enrolled student’s personal information confidential. Confidential information includes the student’s name, specifics of the disability, and any personally identifying information.


In good academic standing with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Has completed a comparable lab course with a B or better.

Must attend each scheduled lab.
